What is Yoga Nidra?

Yoga Nidra is a powerful yogic technique of deep relaxation. It has been grossly overlooked by the body-obsessed modern yoga practitioner who starts and ends his yoga journey with only the yoga asanas, or poses. Since we live a life that is constantly about moving on to the next thing, we hardly stop to pause, digest, and reflect on what is going on in the present moment. Leading such lives impacts our everyday quality of ‘being’, and more often than not, to make up for this kind of lifestyle, we collapse onto our couches with our senses indulged in coffee, pizza, and the television set displaying our favorite drama, and mistaken it ‘relaxing‘. Some days it could be a glass of wine, or your therapists couch. Either way, what if we could understand how to relax consciously, on our own, and allow our senses to actually rest instead of indulge?

True relaxation is an internal experience and cannot be derived from anything outside. For absolute relaxation one must remain aware. This is Yoga Nidra, the state of dynamic sleep.

It is a systematic method of introducing complete physical, mental and emotional relaxation. Yoga means ‘union’ and Nidra means ‘sleep’.  During the practice of Yoga Nidra, one appears to be asleep, but the consciousness is functioning at a deeper level of awareness. It is the threshold between sleep and wakefulness. During this practice, the state of relaxation is reached by turning our focus inwards, away from external distractions. Once the focus is turned inwards, the practice is a tool to feel mentally, emotionally and physically revitalized – completely, from the inside out. This kind of experience much be practiced to be fully understood – don’t just take our word for it. Join us for a night of Yoga Nidra this September at Aham Yoga!
