Spotlight on Yoga: Douglas Ridings
Apr 1, 2016 @ 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm| $10
Douglas shares, “There has been much discussion lately about the more vigorous practices of modern Yoga and whether or not they actually constitute Yoga in a traditional sense especially since many aspects of the “classic” Asana and Vinyasa we are familiar with were inherited from European gymnastics (popular in India in the start of the last century). However, India does have its own long history of physical culture with Classical Indian Dance, Kushti (Indian wrestling), Kalari Payattu and other martial arts of Southeast Asia. The history of these physical arts and the history of Yoga are intertwined and have cross-pollinated each other throughout the centuries.”
Douglas will lead a fun, expressive, and challenging class which draws from these related arts as well as the Yogasana and Vinyasa flow familiar to modern Yoga practitioners. By utilizing this dynamic physicality to harness the power of the breath, develop a capacity for functional, efficient movement and cultivate a high degree of mental focus, we will lay the groundwork for the deep stillness of meditative absorption.
Douglas will be joined by Stephen Fandrich (Gamelan Pacifica, Spite House, Seattle Harmonic Voices) who will provide a rich and resonant Bhavana (mood, atmosphere) with his sensitive and highly skilled musicianship. Come and experience a fresh and innovative practice of embodied art that is steeped in history and tradition.
