Strong and Supple: Integrating Flexibility with Strength Seattle Yoga Arts

It’s an exciting time for yoga asana!

For decades flexibility and “lengthening” muscles were the focus of practice. As knowledge from exercise science and biomechanics are applied to asana, we are moving toward a more integrated view that recognizes the importance of muscular strength as well as flexibility.

In this lively workshop we will:

  • Discuss the nervous system’s role in flexibility and strength.
  • Uncover why strengthening a “tight” muscle might be more beneficial than stretching it.
  • Perform simple movement screens to determine areas lacking strength and/or mobility and explore a step-by-step process for bringing these areas back into balance.
  • Explore the supercharged movements that simultaneously improve strength and mobility.
  • Practice simple progressions and regressions of movements to seamlessly unify a mixed level class.
  • Think critically and creatively about how to apply modern knowledge of our human structure to the traditional practice of yoga asana.

Come ready to move! You will leave with new ideas and solutions that you can implement immediately into your personal practice or your teaching.

This class will include a small booklet as well as access to videos of the movements and sequences taught in the workshop.

Schedule:

  • Friday, March 8, 5:00-7:00p
  • Saturday, March 9, 1:00-6:00p
  • Sunday, March 10, 1:00-4:00p

Hours: 10 hours
