4-WEEK SERIES with special guest Amy Reed Aarabi

Calling all history buffs, philosophy nerds, teachers of yoga & curious minds! Do you know where the practices of yoga come from? Is yoga a religion and what is its relationship to Hinduism? Is there one, authentic yoga? How did colonialism influence modern yoga? How do you teach modern yoga in a way that is culturally respectful and historically accurate?

In this course, we’ll center ourselves in the 5000+ year history of the Yoga Tradition. We’ll take broad strokes and examine fine-grained nuances of yoga philosophy through the ages. We’ll read primary source texts to illuminate the different threads of yoga over time. And we’ll consider what it means to be a Westerner teaching and practicing yoga in the modern era.

You will gain an expanded understanding of the richness and complexity of the Yoga tradition, which in turn, will inform your personal practice of yoga.

About the Instructor: Amy (Reed) Aarabi

Amy Reed Yoga SeattleAmy Aarabi has been a dedicated teacher of yoga and meditation for 17 years and a devoted student for over 25. She is known for her clear and precise alignment instruction, informed by over a decade of study in anatomy, functional movement, and modern somatic practices. She is loved for her adept storytelling, weaving myth, history and philosophy seamlessly into the fold of embodied practice. Amy is passionate about grounding modern postural yoga practice in its rightful, messy context, which includes: ancient and modern history, philosophical complexity, misogyny, colonialism, cultural appropriation, and a host of other paradoxes. Amy is committed to offering the full spectrum of yoga, through asana, breath-work, meditation, comparative philosophy, and self-inquiry. Considered a teacher’s teacher, Amy has led hundreds of students through in-depth study programs, national and international retreats, as well as 200 and 300 hour Yoga Teacher Training programs on the East and West Coast. She is also a mama and wife, a daughter and a friend who loves cooking, hiking, and wild places. She has a BA in Geology from Smith College and a Master’s in Public Policy from the University of Washington. Her classes are queer, trans & POC affirming spaces and she invites solidarity to make her classes more accessible to people who have been systematically under-resourced.
