The Neurobiology of Yoga

Dec 16, 2016

| $155.00

Event Navigation

“Yoga is a complex, adaptive and widely applicable method of physical and mental training with multiple tools for self-development and improving self-regulation.” Frontiers in Human Neuroscience

Our brains, bodies and nervous systems have the capacity to rewire themselves based on where we focus our attention. Consciously performed yoga and/or meditation practice increases neural activity from your brain to your body, increasing nerve fibers, and, over time, your capacity to perceive more subtle sensations, regulate emotions, and strengthen focus.

In this training, you will learn about exciting new research on the relationship between breath, nervous system, muscle tone, and cognitive and neuronal science relating to movement and meditation.

You will learn:

  • How conscious breathing is the most effective way to release tight muscles.
  • How to direct awareness in ways that support the nervous system’s ability to rewire itself.
  • How meditation decreases mass in the amygdala, the fear and anxiety part of the brain.
  • How mirror neurons improve movement patterns.
  • How yoga and meditation support “top down” brain activity, allowing higher regulatory brain function.
  • “Bottom up” nervous system regulation: how what’s going on in your body affects your mood, thoughts and behaviors.
  • How yoga practices affect the vagal nerve and support feeling safer.
  • How brain and body communicate for optimal well-being.
  • How yoga and meditation slow memory and cognitive decline associated with aging.
  • How yoga increases self-compassion and nonjudgmental self-awareness.

This workshop is open to anyone, and is part of our 300-hour Advanced Teacher Training. If you are taking the classes toward your advanced teaching certification, you can register online in advance.
