Everywhere you we look these days it seems we are confronted with language about trauma. But what is it and how does it impact both you and your students?

Understanding trauma and how traumatic experience takes up residence in the body is a valuable, if not essential component to working with students in any body-based practices, especially yoga. When you expand your capacity to speak to the needs of healing trauma, you help create space for healing and growth for all of your students.

This 3-day teacher training module will introduce you to and help deepen your understanding of the degrees of trauma, Post-traumatic Stress Disorder of varying types, the dynamics of implicit and explicit memory in practice, and the neurobiological elements of holding space for and healing from trauma in yoga. In addition, we will examine scholarly articles, anecdotal experience, philosophical tools, and considerations for conducting a trauma-sensitive class.

Lastly, and not least, we will look at how social and political structures in our society foster trauma and how we can disrupt this cycle of trauma in our classes by addressing the structures of oppression; e.g. racism, sexism, ableism, genderism, ageism, classism, colorism, sizeism, etc. We will look at implicit and explicit ways to support resilience and healing from these forms of oppression.

There will be information sharing through discussion and lecture, as well as a chance for group work and physical practice to enhance how you listen for and teach to trauma in your students.
