Seattle Yoga News is on a mission to find and highlight all of the hidden, and maybe not so hidden, gems in our yoga community and beyond. We want you to learn about their experiences and perspectives, but also a bit more about their personalities, so we have a few fun questions for them. This week’s spotlight is turned towards Kevin Ng who was recently announced a Fitbit Ambassador.

HOW DID YOU DISCOVER YOGA?

Kevin Ng:

My cousin reluctantly dragged me to a hot yoga class as I was on my personal weight loss journey. At my heaviest I was 240lbs and mostly doing cardio/body weight circuit stuff to try and get the weight off. After my first class, it was love at first breath being touched by the energy both physically and mentally; I never experienced something that felt so intrinsically right. Like many of us, I got bitten by the bug and was hungry to experience more. 500 hours of personal practice later, I transformed my body and lost 60lbs. In addition to the physical, I gained a new found perspective on life and felt inspired to share my experience and journey with others. I became certified as an instructor and the passion to help others achieve the same self-realization began.

WHAT INSPIRED TO BECOME A YOGA AND MINDFULNESS TEACHER?

Kevin Ng:

One of my favorite quotes summarizes it better than I can: the journey of self, through self, to self. As many of us have experienced, through yoga and mindfulness I have realized the best version of myself and the awareness to recognize its evolution. Having the opportunity to practice this is inspiring enough but, being in a position to guide others is truly something that I treasure. Being a part of and witnessing others on their own journeys of self-realization inspires me daily. Reading posts and messages from others saying how one of my classes or sessions impacted their perspective or helped them realize something is all the inspiration I need.

WHAT CAN PEOPLE EXPECT WHEN THEY ATTEND ONE OF YOUR YOGA CLASSES?

Kevin Ng:

The unexpected ☺ Although my class is rooted in power viyasa from a physical perspective, I integrate a wide variety of different elements such as cardio, core work, plyometrics, tabata, etc to create an experience that is a departure from a student’s traditional practice and unique to my perspective. In addition to the asanas, there is always a message based on mindfulness which I share with the purpose of widening student’s perspective on presence and thought. The final element that brings it all together is the music where I create a soundtrack that enhances the energy of the class and highlights the message I am trying to convey.

WHAT ARE YOU MOST EXCITED ABOUT REGARDING THIS NEW ROLE AS FITBIT AMBASSADOR?

When doing research on the company, I came across Fitbit’s mission statement as follows “To empower and inspire you to live a healthier, more active life. We design products and experiences that fit seamlessly into your life so you can achieve your health and fitness goals, whatever they may be.” As you can see, I drew parallels with how I strive to connect others personally to their best selves with yoga and mindfulness and how Fitbit does the same with technology. I felt it was a great opportunity for us to come together to create an experience that was unique and aligned. I am excited about the opportunity to reach different groups of people and share my perspective on yoga and mindfulness, especially with those that haven’t experienced it before. Our monthly events serve as the perfect forum to experience things risk free, removing the hassle of having to purchase an intro package or private session.
