Pranayama is an ancient and integral part of Yoga – the yogic art of breathing. An ancient yoga practice that draws our focus inwards towards the breath, enabling us with various techniques that improve respiration, invigorates the lungs, improves brain function, feeds all other bodily systems, and helps to create longevity in our lives. Think of it as “poses” for the subtle body. Breathing classes are offered at regular intervals at Aham Yoga. And this season, we are adding restorative yoga to the mix. If you are always on the go, come indulge and restore yourself with our Pranayama and Restorative Yoga series with Arundhati Baitmangalkar.

What is Pranayama?

Pranayama is a seated practice where one intentionally, rhythmically, and rigorously works with the breath through guided instruction. The word pranayama means ‘extension of breath’ (prana = breath & ayama = extension). It is an inseparable part of yoga and is preceded by asana or the physical practice. To be able to achieve success in the practice one needs to have an established practice of asana. To get started with your physical practice, click here. The practice is subtle yet powerful, leading to numerous physical, mental and emotional benefits.

What is Restorative Yoga?

We work very hard and fast in our everyday lives, and while we may sleep, we rarely take time to “rest”. Restorative yoga poses help you learn to relax and rest deeply and completely, During deep relaxation, all the organ systems of the body are benefited, and a few of the measurable results of deep relaxation are the reduction of blood pressure, serum triglycerides and blood sugar levels in the blood, the increase of the “good cholesterol” levels, as well as improvement in digestion, fertility, elimination, the reduction of muscle tension, insomnia and generalized fatigue.

Restorative yoga poses are typically done with the help of yoga props. Restorative yoga is not about strengthening or stretching. It is about receiving. It’s very important in a culture that suggests doing all the time to understand what it means to be simple, quiet, still and at ease within ourselves.

So come join us for this 5-hour exploration of it means to truly restore, rejuvenate and relax deeply.
